€13.99

ISBN:9781856365063

DETAILS:

Dan Breen started the War of Independence. He was the leader of the Third Tipperary Brigade and he sustained 22 bullet wounds evading the British. After the War of Independence, he fought in the Civil War, taking the Republican side when it was obvious that the two sides could not be reconciled.

Later he moved to America where, at the height of prohibition, he ran a speakeasy, or illegal bar. Back in Ireland, he spent several years in Dáil Éireann, tried to establish a native film industry and continued to pursue a dream of a thirty-two county Ireland. This is a revised and updated edition of the successful biography which was first published in 1981.

Joe Ambrose is the author of nine books including Dan Breen and the IRA and the novels, Serious Times and Too Much Too Soon which were praised by The Guardian as being unputdownable. A native of Tipperary, where as a child he knew many of the leaders of that countys IRA campaign, he now divides his time between London, Ireland, and Morocco. He has broadcast with RTÉ, BBC World Service, Lyric FM, and Channel 4.

His books include two novels for Pulp Books, Serious Time (1998) and Too Much Too Soon (2000); a punk rock book for Omnibus Press Moshpit Culture (2001); an investigation of covert punk culture from inside the moshpit, Gimme Danger (2004); a biography of punk icon Iggy Pop.

He is Literary Editor of outsideleft.com Outsideleft.com.
